I AM THE NIGHT

‘I AM THE NIGHT’

11 x 17 PRINT on ARCHIVAL WATERCOLOR PAPER Each Print is signed, numbered, & HAND EMBOSSED with my DOUBLE T logo. LIMITED TO ONLY 75 PRINTS per COLOR EDITION

July 23, 2014 has Officially been dubbed BATMAN DAY to celebrate the DARK KNIGHT's 75th Anniversary. To honor the CAPED CRUSADER I created an Illustration depicting BATMAN doing what he does best, leaping into the DARK ABYSS of DANGER to bring CRIMINALS to JUSTICE. Whether it was the comic books, cartoons, or even the live action movies, BATMAN has always stayed above the rest as being the MOST RECOGNIZABLE SUPER HERO ICON, EVER! And MY PERSONAL FAVORITE SUPER HERO (And YES, he is a SUPER Hero. He doesn't have any SUPER POWERS but he is the epitome of HUMAN PERFECTION in INTELLIGENCE & PHYSICAL ABILITIES. Technically making him SUPER human. BOOM!)

For my Illustration I decided to do 3 Different Color Editions. Representing the 3 Different BATMAN suits I grew up reading in the comic books. The CLASSIC BLUE & GRAY Batman, the DARK KNIGHT RETURNS BLACK & GRAY Batman, and finally the NEW 52 Semi-Armored version Batman (IMO The version that BAT-FLECK’s suit looks the most like)

“I am VENGEANCE. I am the NIGHT... I AM BATMAN!"

Happy B day Old Man.

ROLL OUT!

ROLL OUT!!

For my Second movie Illustration for FANDANGO I created an Illustration for the latest installment of the TRANSFORMERS franchise, TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION opening June 27th. Growing up, OPTIMUS PRIME was always my favorite Transformer, so I had rep the PRIME with this illustration.

The first image I saw for the movie was this logo below.

I assume in the beginning they planned on using a '4' in the title of this movie, but later went without the number in the title. I loved the simplicity of this logo & the perfect way the 4 fit w/ the Split DECEPTICON logo. I decided for my illustration I wanted to do my interpretation of this logo but not with an actual '4' but with OPTIMUS in a stance that resembles a '4' & fit with a split AUTOBOT logo.

Here is a pic of my finished pencils for the illustration. OPTIMUS' body is in the shape of the number 4 with his sword adding to help sell the '4' shape.

I planned on creating the details for the sword in ILLUSTRATOR. Just add BAD ASS SWORD FILTER.

Not only did I want to illustrate the latest version of OPTIMUS, but also add bits of the G1 TF world I grew up with. I wanted to do the GRID BG as a homage to the G1 toy packaging.

G1 PACKAGING Design along with CHUNKY OPTIMUS PRIME

I first went with a plain RED GRADIENT BG.

RED/YELLOW GRADIENT like TF G1 Packaging

But based on some great comments I got from the FANDANGO peeps they suggested I tone down the BG so OPTIMUS could POP OUT more. I think the solid BLACK BG really helped to push OPTIMUS forward. BOOM!

Always bet on BLACK! Nopal you were right.

Not only was the BG a G1 reference, but I added a lil something special to SWORD HANDLE.

For a 1,000,000 NERD POINTS, what's on the SWORD HANDLE? HINT: "OPEN DAMMIT!"

RUN!!!... IT's GODZILLA

So here it is! My GODZILLA Artwork exclusively created for FANDANGO

This was a fun project. Fandango approached me & asked if I would like to create artwork for a few upcoming Summer releases. And OBVIOUSLY I said "HELL YES!" The first movie to get the TT treatment was Gareth Edward's take on the KING OF MONSTERS, GODZILLA. I have been a fan of GODZILLA since I was a kid, but have never really drew him. So this was a first for me & I am really happy the way it turned out.

1st Pencil Rough
This was my first pencil rough of my idea. I wanted to focus on GODZILLA doing his trademark ROAR & incorporating his JAPANESE heritage with the "RISING SUN" rays in the BG. The TEXT would represent the MONSTROUS ROAR shooting out of GODZILLA's mouth. Overall I wanted the artwork to have a very minimalistic look to it.

Final Pencils

This is the Finished Pencils. The scales were fun to draw, but I knew it would be a pain to vectorize. I wanted to play up the contrast of Lights & Darks. Play up the "coming out of the shadows"/ dark feel of GODZILLA that the trailers have been focusing on. I made adjustments to his snout from the Pencil roughs, but I still was not that satisfied by the snout even at this stage. I really liked the way the font turned out. The MOTION LINES really helped to sell the "ROAR" look of the font.

"GOJIRA"
ROAAARRRRRR!!!!

Black (and White) Scales

BEHOLD! GODZILLA the KING OF MONSTERS. The next step was to digitally ink my pencils, add the RISING SUN rays in the BG and add the JAPANESE Characters for GODIZLLA. I adjusted the scale & width of GODZILLA's head once I finished vectorizing it. Once inked, I decided to keep him Black & White, as a throwback to the original B/W GODZILLA movies I use to watch as a kid.

I hope you liked this Illustration. Stay tuned for more Movie artwork exclusively created for FANDANGO. To see the FULL image in all it's HI-RES GLORY & to buy your tickets for GODZILLA head over to FANDANGO.
